In 2009 my parents’ home burned to the ground, along with 60 others in their neighborhood, from a raging grass fire in the foothills of the sierras. My mom was 85, my dad was 94. And I was 59, a realtor and grandma of 3. After helping relocate the folks to an assisted living facility, over the next 12 months Mom broke her wrist, arm and back, her dementia accelerated rapidly and Dad was still driving, all alarming conditions. The family agreed on a plan I presented that included having our parents move down to Southern California with me. My brother said I’d last 3 months. It’s now 2016, over 5+ years and an incalculable learning curve since then.
